The Project
The spring of 2014 will mark 100 years since 251 of our province’s beloved sons and fathers were lost in the SS Newfoundland and SS Southern Cross disasters.

These disasters have become defining moments in our shared provincial narrative resonating with artists, mariners and historians at home and abroad. With your help, we will unveil a memorial commemorating the sacrifices of all sealers and celebrating the historic contributions they made to the economy and social fabric of Newfoundland and Labrador.
This campaign was initiated by the Elliston Heritage Foundation in 2008 “with the initial goal of creating a lasting memorial to those who lost their lives”. The town of Elliston, like many other communities, suffered greatly as a result of the SS Newfoundland's misfortune. This, coupled with the town’s rich sealing history, makes it a fitting location for the interpretive home. This site will draw those seeking to understand, remember, reflect and learn.
